Once more, a rather short post. Quick thought, I would say. I usually write such things, when I don’t have time to write something longer, but, also, less text in posts leaves more place for comments, ideas of readers (see Psychological motives of a character’s choice). So, let’s get straight to the point.
Today, as I was reading one of my favourite RPG boards, I found a topic: How to be a sympathetic GM?

Well, as you may expect, there is something wrong with the question. The thing is, it is not the point to be sympathetic GM. Obviously, it is usually good to be a sympathetic person, who everyone like. But, as a game master - it is not necessary.

A GM (DM) should be good, skilled, know the rules and be a good storyteller and sometimes judge. He doesn’t need to be sympathetic.Playing RPGs is about exploring imaginary worlds and so on. Players come to play, not to listen you talking. That is a fundamental difference between GMing and telling your child a story.

You are GMing, not giving a speech. Players want to play, not listen to you. You can be sympathetic after the game, during the game you should be skilled.

Finally, don’t get me wrong. Being sympathetic GM (whatever it may mean) is OK, as long as you remember that is not the most important factor. Don’t change the game to make it easier for the players, or give them what they want, just like that, because they asked you and you want to be a good friend.

Well, does it make any sense?

i thought about putting it to “GMing advice” category, but it is not professional enough…
