Charging Knigh
I guess I first read about mid-combat summaries in RolePlayingTips. They allow us to add some more atmosphere to a fight, make it more climatic and also ensure that everyone knows what is going on in the battle. They work best in long lasting, slaughter-type combats.
So, here is how it all works.
During the battle, let’s say every 3-5 minutes you stop to give a description of what is going on and what has happened so far. You simply sum up all what has happened, adding some nice details and suggesting what may happen in the nearest future.
There few things that you have to keep in mind:

1. Describe characters’ actions in chronological order
So that everyone knows what happened when.

2. Add describe enemies and characters action in details.
At least one action of each. Everyone likes to listen about his/hers hero actions.

3. Suggest what may happen next.
“The battle is going to be really difficult.”

4. Remind the players where the exits are and that there is a possibility of escape.
See Fight Club - “No one wants to die.”

5. Be sure to include description of actions of every player.
No one likes to be left behind.

That’s all. It is simple method to add some more climate to your game, fill the time when you are checking some rules and keep fluff-oriented players happy.
